Went to check out the new Batman film on Sunday – it’s fantastic – highly recommend… although there were a few kids there who may have been a bit young in my opinion, it was pretty violent! (having said that, what do I know what’s appropriate for kids these days). Having the Dexcom was absolutely brilliant at the cinema. I’d had lunch shortly beforehand so was keen to make sure I wasn’t going too low or high afterwards. The usual routine of getting the test kit out and squinting to try to see the screen/drop of blood on your finger when the film hits a sunny patch were far from my mind. Smugly, I just reached into my pocket and hit the button, and up on the screen came my BG…. Albeit in American mg/dl so I had to do some mental calculations, but I’m getting used to the general ‘zone’ my blood sugars should be in in mg/dl now anyway.
This morning I went to my first RPM class with the Dexcom so I was interested to see what went on. Unfortunately I woke up with a 15.3 so it wasn’t an entirely ideal situation – I’d already taken 5u humalog before I left home at 5.35am. But essentially, my BG went down by just 3.0 mmol during the 45 minute class. RPM (also known as spin) is one of the most intense aerobic classes you can do at the gym, so it’s surprising it didn’t go down even further I thought, especially with an extra 5u on board.
I’ve been doing a carbo loading type regime after the gym lately which involves having a big dose of carbs straight after class with some short acting insulin. This works most of the time but I’ve been caught out a couple of times with a blood sugar crash (once while driving to work from the gym) so it was actually really reassuring to have the Dexcom with me for the ½ hour drive into work…. It was dropping pretty steadily but was still reasonably high so all went fine and dandy.
This morning was also my first instance of showering at the gym with the Dexcom…. Much easier than the Minimed! I just took it into the showers with me in a little leather pouch and hung it off the door away from the spray. I’m getting used to having to carry it with me everywhere and have only had a few instances of getting up from my desk/wandering around the house without it. And as for the insertion and the receiver which sticks out of my stomach: I think I might have got one or two sly looks, but people are too busy getting themselves ready to really stare at others anyway I reckon.
EDIT: I’m pleased so see I’m not the only one thinking that the film is a bit violent for kiddies – The Herald has an article about it here.
