So my first week on the Dexcom was up today (I’ve signed up for four weeks all up) and it was time to change over the sensor – something I’d only done with Justin from Insulin Pumps by my side, so I was keen not to mess it up on my own. It’s a pretty intuitive process, but you don’t want to get it wrong at $125 a pop, so I took care to re-read the instructions carefully. Always pays to get things right when needles are involved too, I find.

So I grabbed all my gear and headed off to the most isolated loo in the building – didn’t want the pressure of having to do it quickly. All…

Well, thanks to my trusty Dexcom, I’ve caught those naughty overnight blood sugars in their tracks. I now have three nights’ worth of data which shows the little blighters partying it up while I’m asleep, much like we as teenagers would when our parents went away for the weekend. What I plan to do about this I’m not too sure at this stage – being less than three weeks from hooking up to a pump (see previous post) I’m almost reluctant to be changing regimes at this point even though this will continue to hinder my HbA1c (and ability to sleep).

Great news, I have finally got an appointment to get trained up on a pump – yippeeee! August 18 is the big day. Yeah!!

(having said that, what do I know what’s appropriate for kids these days). Having the Dexcom was absolutely brilliant at the cinema. I’d had lunch shortly beforehand so was keen to make sure I wasn’t going too low or high afterwards. The usual routine of getting the test kit out and squinting to try to see the screen/drop of blood on your finger when the film hits a sunny patch were far from my mind. Smugly, I just reached into my pocket and…

So on Friday the news was all about this massive storm which was due to hit the North Island… Apparently the biggest in 10 years. Hmmm. Seemed pretty unbelieveable with the lovely day we had on Fri, and after working about 60 hours in five days, the last thing I wanted to do was head to the shops to stock up on candles etc (we are in the middle of making our way through the last season of the Sopranos…it’s important to have goals).

Saturday came and we kept an eye on the weather. It was raining very heavily (but we DO live in Auckland) and the wind got pretty high but by 2pm we were still pretty skeptical of…
