If you’ve been reading the NZ Herald this week, you’ll have seen two articles regarding the work which Living Cell Technologies, who are leading the worldwide experiments around pig cell transplants into T1s, with some amazing results so far.

Whether or not you believe this is going to be the breakthrough which gives us the most hope for being cured of diabetes in our lifetime (and whether or not you think you could afford the $100k price tag to make it happen!), I think everyone would agree that it is absolutely awesome that so much work is going into our cause.

Man in Diabetic Shock Gets Tasered

I’ve heard a few stories like this one – for example I remember a few years back, a Japanese tourist got refused entry to a bus because they thought he was drunk – turns out he was a type 1 having a severe case of insulin shock.

Hey all,
I bring this post to you from the warm comfort of my living room at home having finished work last Friday and also having just listened to the BBC broadcast I mentioned in a post a while ago about Type 1 in kids that I first heard in my car.

I won’t let you all know what I reckon just yet cos I want to see what your thoughts are without my opinion weighing in so let me know once you have had a chance to listen (save to say that it was interesting of course).

I currently have not one, not two, but THREE insulin pumps in my possession. Unfortunately I don’t own a single one of them. Boooo! I started on the Animas today (will report back when I’ve had a chance to settle in with it) and have the Cozmo pump plus a back-up one I’ve had since the last one broke a week or so ago to give back to the rep on Thursday.

This is almost as ironic as a free ride when you’ve already paid (a la Alanis Morrissette, i.e not that ironic but a little bit interesting). I have just been turned down by four separate organisations whom I applied to for pump funding. Well I say…

I have been very, very fortunate to have now been on a loan insulin pump since late August 2008 – nearly ten months now. The pump it all started with was the Deltec Cozmo, pictured on the left. The Cozmo has been a great little pump to start off on. It’s all I know, but having seen a couple of others in action (the Roche H Tron and the Roche D Tron as well as one of the ancient Medtronic Minimeds), I feel very fortunate to have been given this one to use – it’s a smart pump which has lots of cool features like insulin on board, site change reminders, insulin to carb ratios and a lot of other…
