OK, now that I’ve got your attention, I have a request to ask of you. (Sorry, there are no free insulin pumps and consumables…. but we are going to try to at least get the MoH to consider subsidising both, or just the consumables).
A friend of mine, Ruth Hill, is getting together an Application for Funding to the Ministry of Health for insulin pumps and consumables. Here is her message, below:
Right people. I URGENTLY NEED YOUR HELP. I want to make an Application for Funding to the Ministry of Health. I need emails/letters from as many people as possible explaining how your life has or would be drastically improved by the best Type 1 diabetes management out there – insulin pump therapy versus multiple daily injections. Your help is essential.
Health funding will be finalised in May 2010 and I want to have the application ready by March in order to approach the media and get further national attention on this. Please email me with your letters to ruthanna99@gmail.com. This is going to be big, but we can only achieve our absolute best with everyone’s support. I look forward to your responses!
I have written my letter, and uploaded it here for you to see.
Please spend 20mins this weekend writing yours – if you’re on an insulin pump, or even if you aren’t and would like to be (or on behalf of your child). Medical professionals – you can jump in too on our behalf and tell stories of improvements you’ve seen.
Cheers
Nic

Huge respect for Ruthie and you guys giving a voice to diabetes. T1 is not visable or dramatic like other disabilites and the benefits of good control arent immediate (or what gets governments re-elected it seems). Thanks again you guys! My letter has been written.

Thanks for sending this on. I’ll do my bit over the weekend. After 35 years of diabetes, with 25 years on a pump I think I can add my tuppence worth. (that dates me, doesn’t it!) Your letter is great, dealing well with the issues. I do hope Health professionals dealing with pumps will respond too as there are some with a negative attitude who are quick to air their views as well.

Way to go Kathy! I can’t believe you’ve been pumping for 25 years – so since 1985? I’d love to hear your story about the changes you’ve seen and experienced, would you consider writing a guest blog?
