…. is illegal now in NZ as we all know. However, what about bolusing and driving?
Yesterday I was in Ponsonby to have coffee with a friend. I was on my way home, sitting at the traffic lights near Three Lamps. I first of all did a BG test while I sat there. It was ever so slightly on the high side so I then reached down to my pump to program in a correction bolus.
It was at this point that I realised that I was sitting bang, smack outside the Ponsonby Police station. And a policeman was just locking up his patrol car in the carpark about 5m from where my car was sitting. Before he could come up and tell me to always extended bolus on the pie, the light had gone green and I’d driven off, completing the bolus as I went.
I wonder if I could have got in trouble for that?

I’m always testing and driving and thinking how dodgy that is… but those long red lights are so tempting!

I love the way you make testing sound like such a tempting treat, Sarah…. but I know exactly what you mean! Better to be testing and catching any hypos before they happen though, right?

I love the old driving with one hand holding the finger pricker, the other hand streering with a finger being pricked. Machine wedged between the thighs. Safe as houses! Never done it myself of course.

Ha! Love it Lucy…. I’ve never done that either

I’ve bolused many, many times while driving on the LA freeways.
I’m waiting for a police officer to pull me over…

I don’t know about while driving, but at work one day I was working back lab and i had tested mine it was a little high and at that time I was on the pump, so I pulled my pump out to bolus and my boss came back there and tried to get me in trouble for it…first she thought it was my phone! then when i showed her it was my pump she still tried to say something about it. But hey I will get in trouble anyday to correct a high BS and take care of myself!!

Here, in Canada….it doesn’t matter what’s in your hand. If it’s distracting and causes an accident, you’ll be fined. The fine for texting/cell phones etc is $500. You’re better to pull over and test on the side of the road or parking lot.
Also, in this country, if you’re testing your BG in your car, not only must you have pulled over, but you have to physically remove yourself from the driver’s seat. This, I suppose, to demonstrate that you have enough presence of mind to recognize that there is a concern and that you shouldn’t be driving.

Very interesting, Linda – I think we will take a while to get to that level of sophistication here in NZ. We have similar sort of laws around drinking, I believe you can’t even have an open vessel with alcohol in it in the car, nor can you walk to your car with the keys in your hand even if just to get something out of it if you’re intoxicated…. again it signals intent.
