As everyone in NZ is aware, Christchurch has been thrown completely sideways by a horrendous earthquake.

What I want to know is how the T1 community can help our fellow T1s. Do you know anyone down there who urgently needs supplies or help? I’ve already heard from one AKL T1 who’s offering her family bach in Piha for anyone who needs to get out of Chch to look after their diabetes….

In a total David vs Goliath scenario last night, this little website beat all of its competitors to take out the Netguide Best Lifestyle Site award!! I found out last night by text message (I had been offered free tickets at the last minute but opted instead to come home and pack my bags and get ready for the DYNZ conference) and many hours later I am still shocked!

To put this into perspective, the winners of the other categories are the likes of TVNZ , Telstra Clear, The Warehouse, Mighty Ape, Stuff.co.nz and Google. Does the song “one of these things is not like the other ones” spring to mind?

Overall, the out-take from this is that you lot…

Hi everyone.

Well, the finalists for the Netguide Web Awards have been announced here and I’m totally thrilled to share with you that BeingDiabetic is one of them!

We’re up against grownups.co.nz and healthyfood.co.nz which obviously have much bigger potential audiences than this site (There are only 17,000 T1s in the country; yet grownups attracts audiences of NZers 50years+ and healthyfood.co.nz appeals to anyone interested in cooking).

So, what I’m saying is – for a small diabetes community, we sure have a loud voice, managing to get BeingDiabetic into the final three. In fact, looking at all of the sites in the finals across all of the categories, I think BeingDiabetic is probably the…

Hi everyone – I got an emails from two readers last week which I would love your input on please.

ONE:

My mum is hosting a radio segment in New Plymouth which starts up soon about diabetes…along with the medical team up there and has been asking me for a name for her segment. Wondered if you had any ideas on a name and some topics you think would be important to cover? They will be talking about all kinds of things to do with diabetes and interviewing medical people on the show.
Can you help this BeingDiabetic reader out? Questions:

- what should her Mum call the show?

- what topics would you want covered in a radio…

So we’ve been talking about it for a while now, and the time has finally come. Tomorrow afternoon, Aaron is jetting off to Montreal (via Tahiti and San Francisco) for his new life. Us Aucklanders had a special dinner for him on Monday last week where I gave a short speech and I’ll highlight it here… Aaron has been a great friend, co-blogger and all-round good sort. I’m going to miss him a great deal. He’ll still be blogging once he reaches and settles in Canada, but he’s on a bit of a holiday for the next few weeks, so for now I thought I’d post this lovely pic of he and his husband Andy from dinner last week, and…

I saw a mention of this in a newsletter which came into my inbox about World Diabetes Day and I was intrigued. What is this Desert Dingo Racing I wondered, and what has it got to do with diabetes? I went to their site, saw the car (see image on the right), and was instantly enamoured.

I remember as a very little girl my brother and I were big fans of the Herbie movies (like Herbie goes to Monte Carlo etc) and this car (a 1969 VW Beetle) is just like it.

So I still haven’t put the pieces together for you. It’s pretty simple really – the…

When I was waiting to hear if I was going to be one of the lucky ones to be issued with the pump, I spoke to various people at the hospital to keep up to date. One conversation didn’t go so well because the person on the other end was telling me the committee responsible for allocating the pumps had been strongly in favour of only loaning them out to people under the age of 25 (at that point I was…

I have to admit I was as clueless as all the rest until a couple of years ago when I really started to actually monitor my BGs. And now I have a new one to add to the list: laksa. My husband makes a mean laksa (after flatting with a Malaysian chap many years ago, he has the dish down to a fine art). We had it for dinner a…
