One of our lovely BeingDiabetic community members has signed herself up for the Oxfam Trailwalker challenge in April.

She’s asked me to throw these two questions to you lot:

1. Have any of you with T1 also signed up for the challenge? If so, would you mind if she contacted you?

2. Does anyone have any hot tips for doing the walk and managing T1 at the same time? Damian, Heidi-Jane, I’m looking at you!!

Cheers

Nic

I got my mountain of Mentos yesterday (see pic!). I’m thinking my time is probably limited on eating sweets to get out of a hypo (seeing as my son is only 3 months). I imagine it would be pretty difficult for a child to understand that “Momma needs to eat sweets” when they are not allowed. This is when the more clinical-looking glucose tablets come in I guess.

I have already eaten half a pack thanks to a 2.8 after my walk this morning. I think that quite possibly cancels out the walk. Ho hum.

I mentioned in my post about camping over New Year that I am no Brad Pitt and that little thought spurred another which then spurred a conversation with my friend about weight and T1 diabetes.

We are all well too aware of the hazards of eating crappy food and putting weight on for no other reason than being a little over indulgent but my friend and I were talking about how us T1’s have got a little more than the average person to factor in if we want to be the belle of the ball. If I exercise I tend to go low and gobble some glucose, if I aren’t paying attention then I have hypos, since going…

I’ve had this discussion with Aaron before so I know I’m not alone in this. Have you ever had a hypo and thought “hmmm – I could eat boring old glucose tablets/sugar/normal stuff I have in the house, but if I hoofed it to the dairy now I could have something YUMMY” (Sara-M I’m reckoning you might be a candidate for this).

I found myself in this position the other day in fact. Was doing my usual walk with the baby in the buggy, and got to the turnaround point, and discovered I was a 3.2 (despite taking my pump off an HOUR before the walk, grrr). I’d walked past the dairy on my way there, and then shortly after…

I got an email the other day from a Wellingtonian named Heidi-Jane, who also has a blog: http://sweetsixteen-diabetes.blogspot.com.

For any of you who find exercise to be frustrating with T1 (like me) and who may be put off by trying to achieve excellence in sport because of trouble with BGs, you should read Heidi-Jane’s blog. This lady already has an Ironman under her belt and has her sights set on another four Ironman competitions in the next four years. What a sportswoman!

Heidi-Jane is doing the NZ Ironman in March and is raising funds for Diabetes Youth NZ. Please visit her fundraising page and give a donation: http://www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/Heidi-JaneHumphries/
