I’m sure that if you are reading this blog, you are already well aware of diabetes: whether it’s your own, someone in your family’s, or your patients’. However, this week is the chance to spread that awareness, help people out who might be in the dark, and hopefully raise some money which will either help New Zealanders get what they need for their diabetes, or help in the race to find a cure.

I don’t think I’ve ever actually observed this week. In my mind it was always just a bunch of old biddies down at the Diabetes Society selling cakes and handing out pamphlets. This year I’m going to actually judge for myself – I’ve taken a day off…

Hi all – well it’s World Diabetes Day today, a day which I’ve never acknowledged or even given any thought to. Today I celebrated being diabetic by getting up at 5:20am to do a spin class, checking my blood sugar midway through, realising it had hit 16.9 for some unknown reason (I was wondering why I was struggling a bit: no energy going to the muscles!), leaving the class halfway through to shoot up, and hoping it would come down. No such luck yet – I’ve now got to 18.1 almost two hours later and taken another 5u. Hmmmm. Think it’s going to be a while before I can eat any breakfast.

To quote the World Diabetes Day website:

In 2007 and 2008, the theme of World Diabetes Day is Diabetes in Children and Adolescents. Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood. Type 1 diabetes is growing by 3% per year in children and adolescents, and at an alarming 5% per year among pre-school children. It is estimated that 70,000 children under 15 develop type 1 diabetes each year (almost 200 children a day). Currently, an estimated 440,000 children live with type 1 diabetes globally.
