With that in mind I thought I’d get a couple of quick whinges out before the weekend.

Whinge 1. When people think it’s funny to pretend they think you get high on insulin.

I had this at work the other day. The guy who said it is a nice guy and very intelligent, but not blessed with wit unfortunately. I was taking my BG as I spoke to him (he’d come over to my desk after all). He took one look and said something like “oooooh, can I have a…

A good friend of mine has been running a shop on Dominion Road for the last ten years and as you can imagine, has seen it all. Dominion road is one of the more colorful neighbourhoods in Auckland with a good mix of people including a few undesirables, the weirdos, funnies, friendlies and everything in between.

I’m sure she thought she had seen pretty much everything that Dominion road had to show her by now but on Wednesday, in came someone that tried her patience in a totally new way!

My friend runs a recycled fashion boutique and said customer had come in to sell some shoes. Just as this potential customer arrived though, said friend was in the throes of…

No, not a line from a bad vampire film, nor even some sort of B grade porno. This, dear readers, is what the woman at the blood lab at Waitakere Hospital said to me as I turned up with my forms for more bloods yesterday. I couldn’t believe it!!

I think she must have felt bad (my VERY curt response of “That’s EXACTLY what you want to hear from someone who’s about to take blood from you” may have made her think), because after that she tried to make nice and talk to me about my son and her grandson, etc, but boy oh boy was that a bad way to start! This is almost as bad as the bloodlab…

I’ve just come back from a diabetes check up at my GP’s.

Aaaand breathe.

You see – when I took my son in for his six week vaccinations, they decided to corner me about not having seen the diabetes nurse at the clinic for over a year.

“Ahhhh”, I said. “That would be because I’ve been under the care of the diabetes department at National Women’s for the last 16 months”.

“Well”, they said. “We need you to come in and we’ll go through a checklist of all of your vital tests etc and check that your diabetes is under control”.

Me: “Oh, but you see I’ve been under the strictest care I’ve had in 15…

I just had to write this post in my lunch break because it’s been distracting me from my work all morning. This comment actually outdoes the colostomy bag comment of 2008 I’m pleased to say (because that comment was made by a very dear friend of mine who was just being dopey and she was as upset about it as I was at the time).

I just met up with a rep from Animas because I’d enquired about looking at some alternative options for infusion sets. We went to a café down the road from my work (which will remain un-named). We were sitting there with our coffees plus a pile of different infusion…

I know that I’ve just posted something but I can’t not post this!

Someone just asked me if my insulin pump was a pacemaker! I don’t think it beats the time Nic was asked if it was a colostomy bag but it’s up there. I replied with a dignified, “I’m 26 years old, 6′ 2″, 80kg and so no – it is not a pacemaker (even if my H-TRON could do with being pimped out a little).

If you read this and took a double take, you were right to – unfortunately I still have diabetes and the title of this post is about what other people have been saying to me lately.

I hate to moan, but last night I woke up in the night at 2.4, stumbled downstairs, ate some glucose, got up in the morning with a 15.4 (overdid the glucose I’m thinking) then went to the gym and had to keep an eye on my glucose all the way through class after taking a correction, then tried some new things with my pump (in relation to the exercise) all day, and now at 7pm I’ve taken 12 tests and had one recent hypo…

I dashed across to the supermarket at lunchtime today (we are lucky to have one just across the road from work) and went straight to the sweets section. You see – I’m getting pretty sick of glucose tablets. They’re good to have in your bag for meetings or for at the gym or places where you need a no fuss, quick sugar hit. But at my desk I reckon I might have a hypo manager which is a little nicer to eat.

Anyway – I’m checking all the backs of the packs to find sweets that are sort of around 5g carb each, and I hear a lady walk up with her friend and say “Oh, now they’ve got sugar…

I came across this article recently and while it sounds like a particularly horrible thing to have happen (to summarise: a school nurse injected five teachers with insulin instead of a flu vaccine), it did answer a question I’ve pondered a few times – what happens if a non-diabetic gets injected with insulin?

I guess this answers it – if it’s a small amount, even if it’s intravenous – it will not kill said non-diabetic. I always assumed it would be close. You’d have to eat a pretty big handful of jelly snakes to get yourself out of that one I’m thinking!

(What has sparked this thought before is when people do that little joke with you –…

Ever noticed how one of the first things people say to you when you say you’re diabetic is something like “oh so does that mean you can’t eat sweets and ice cream?”. I used to answer with a ‘yes, that’s right’ just to keep things simple, and also because that’s the sort of thing we were told back in the day when I was diagnosed.

I think most of us who’ve been diagnosed for 10+ years still probably avoid sweet/sugary foods out of pure habit or the guilty feeling we get while eating them, while some of our contemporaries have been schooled from the start that as long as they bolus for the carbs in the food they’re eating, they…
